Third Sunday in Lent (Oculi)

“Nevertheless many, even of the authorities, believed in Jesus. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.” (John 12:42–43)

In today’s Gospel reading (John 12:37–43), it is said of the Jewish leaders that they believed in Jesus, “but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue”. St John adds that their conduct was driven by the choice to receive recognition from people rather than from God whenever both were not possible at once—as indeed they often are not.

What a contrast this was with their forefather Jeremiah, who boldly said to the powerful people of his day: “Amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God, and the Lord will change his mind about the disaster that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, here I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you!” (See Jeremiah 26:12–16)

As we walk the Lenten path, let us pause to consider what the world around us would be like if every member of our parish grounded their life completely in the Gospel and, in making every decision, took account first and foremost of the Lord’s commandments. What if our chief concern were how to bring joy to God, trusting that he in turn is able ultimately to provide well for all our needs?

See you at church!
