Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost 2025

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. So many gathered that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door, and Jesus spoke the word of God to them. Then four men came to him carrying a paralysed man. When they could not bring him near to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him and, after making an opening, let down the mat on which the paralysed man lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralysed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” (Mark 2)

Today’s Gospel gives us hope that we ourselves may receive help from Jesus. At the same time, it encourages us to look around for those who are paralysed in one way or another, for whom we may become faithful friends able to carry them before Jesus in prayer. It also encourages us to ask Jesus for help so that, even when we can do nothing else, our human weaknesses may at least not obstruct the meeting between Jesus and those who need him.

May almighty God grant us faith that leads us always to bring ourselves and our loved ones close to Jesus; faith that heals us from paralysing sin and sets us free to live and act for the glory of God and the blessing of our neighbours.

See you at church!
