Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. (Matthew 22:37–39)
In one of his biblical commentaries, the renowned fourth-century Church Father St Jerome tells a story about the “blessed evangelist John”, who lived and served in Ephesus in his old age. Because of his advanced years, John was said to have been carried to worship in the arms of his disciples, since he could no longer walk. He said little else, but continually repeated: “Little children, love one another!” When his pupils finally grew tired of hearing the same words, one of them is said to have asked: “Teacher, why do you always say only this?” John replied: “Because it is the Lord’s command; and if this alone is fulfilled, it is enough.”
May these words be written in all our hearts as a rule of life, and may they become visible in the way we live. Welcome to church to meet him who is himself Love. Mass begins today at 10:00 and will be followed by coffee, confirmation class and Sunday school.
