Apostles’ Sunday

Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” (Luke 5:10)

As early as the early Middle Ages, the Feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul was celebrated in memory of their martyrdom on 29 June. They were executed in Rome during the persecutions under Emperor Nero in the 60s AD. When the observance of individual apostles’ days fell out of use in the Lutheran Church, the biblical readings for the Feast of St Peter and St Paul were transferred to this Sunday.

On the Sunday of the Apostles, we remember all the apostles. The Sunday’s biblical readings speak of the calling of the apostles and, more broadly, the task of a disciple. Christ has also deemed us worthy to take part in his work. By being obedient to the word of God, we too share in the new life in Christ.
