The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. (Psalm 145:15)
Today, on the second Sunday of October, we celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving. We pause to reflect on all the good gifts with which God has blessed us. Our fields have borne fruit, our tables are spread, and our hearts are filled with gratitude.
As today’s Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy reminds us (Deuteronomy 8:7–18), we must not forget the Lord our God, who has given us a land of streams and springs, grain and fruit trees. It is his generosity that nourishes and sustains us.
The Apostle Paul calls us to give with joyful hearts (2 Corinthians 9:6–15), for “God loves a cheerful giver”. May this day remind us to share our blessings with those who have less and to become channels of God’s love.
Let us not forget Jesus’ teaching about the rich man in St Luke’s Gospel (Luke 12:13–21): our true wealth is found not in perishable possessions, but in the kingdom of God.
Let us give thanks today for all that is good in our lives. A blessed Harvest Thanksgiving, and see you at church!
