Christ is coming soon!
“Soon”, as we know, is a highly relative term. Its precise meaning depends on the context. In any case, when Christ says “soon”, it means that his coming is not an event that has no bearing on us yet.
The opposite of “soon” is something still far away—something that, in our human weakness, we do not take very seriously even when we know rationally that we should. Deadlines, especially approaching ones, have a wonderfully motivating effect. If an exam or assessment is soon, even an average student begins to work. If the deadline for completing a task is soon, a worker becomes more active. If Christ’s return is soon, a Christian who reckons with it will be active in expectation.
Let us always pray to God for ourselves and our loved ones, that our whole life may be Advent in the best sense—a time of active and longing preparation—so that when Christ’s “soon” arrives for us, we may share in true joy.
Come and meet Jesus at St Elizabeth’s Church today at 10:00, followed by coffee, and at 18:00!
