🔥 PENTECOST—THE FEAST OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH 🔥
Today is Pentecost—the day on which the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the apostles and the Church of Christ was born (Acts 2).
In southern Estonia, Pentecost is also known as suvistepüha, the feast of early summer. This beautiful name reminds us that the Holy Spirit brings life, verdure and spiritual fruitfulness. Just as the earth awakens in spring after winter, so the Spirit of God brings the human heart to life.
The biblical readings for Pentecost speak of the promise and gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus calls him the Comforter, Helper and Advocate. In the Holy Spirit, Christ never leaves his Church alone, but remains always in the midst of his people.
Where the world sows confusion, loneliness and division, the Holy Spirit creates fellowship. He unites different peoples, languages and persons into the one Body of Christ. Pentecost is God’s answer to the scattering at the Tower of Babel: not confusion, but fellowship; not pride, but grace; not fragmentation, but unity in Christ.
