A godparent’s guide

  • I remember my godchild’s birthday, name day and baptismal anniversary. I try to visit or at least send a greeting on these days, and when possible give a small gift to show that I care.
  • I remind my godchild that they are baptised and explain that through Baptism God has received them as His child and called them to be a disciple of Christ. I pray in the presence of my godchild and help them grow in faith.
  • I keep in active contact with my godchild’s parents and make time when my godchild needs me.
  • I listen patiently when my godchild or their parents tell me about their joys and achievements, worries or disappointments. I keep the confidences entrusted to me and help resolve conflicts between my godchild and their parents.
  • I remain attentive to my godchild’s needs and stand up for them. If for any reason the parents are unable to care for their child, I do my best to ensure that my godchild feels safe and cared for.
  • I hope that my godchild will always see me as a good friend and trustworthy companion on life’s journey.
